Invented in Cuba, timbales are shallow, single-headed drums with metal shells. Using slender wooden dowels, the timbalero plays a variety of stick strokes, rim shots, and rolls on the heads to produce a wide range of percussive expression. Uniquely, much of the sound is produced by striking the outer shell of the drum.
